Condenser Mic Mod Service

Would you like your condenser mic to sound better?

To sound as good as a vintage studio mic?

You may have noticed many problems with modern condenser mics: edginess, high-end peaks, uneven response in general, noise. Even in some quality branded mics, there is excess noise and other issues. The common problem, however, is thin, grainy, overly bright sound.

If you own a Rode mic: You've probably noticed the edgy qualities in the Rode mics, and there's a high end peak that really accentuates pings and noises. If you've done many overdubs, you may have noticed they don't blend easily, plus a number of other odd noises, or accentuations, which may not make the mic seem immediately horrible, but are certainly problematic... In general, there's a lot of EQ'ing to get the Rodes to sound decent. If you put one side-by-side with a good vintage mic, even a dynamic like an MD421, the problems leap out.

My component upgrades and modifications fix all of this. Your mic will be smoother on everything, handle transients better, and easily blend with other tracks, and that's before you even touch the EQ. You'll no longer be multiplying problems when you overdub, so mixing will be easier and the sound will be better--helping you to achieve greater success in recording.

When you send your microphone to me for modification, I will remove the sonically inferior electronic components that hinder the sound, replacing them with the highest grade and best sounding components, which will clean up the signal path and smooth the frequency response. I do not alter the appearance of the mic, or remove layers of grille, or make any other cosmetic change that doesn't effect the sound. I only care about making the mic sound as good as it can.

Good sound is my passion.

A note about Rode mics: These are among the finest mics currently made, both in sound quality (once modified) and construction. They have the potential to rival vintage studio microphones, but you would never know it as they are stock. My upgrades and modifications allow them to reach their fullest potential.

Tube Mics

Tube mics require work to the power supply, as well as the microphone itself. Please ship all cables required for the mic to function. Tube replacement is left to the discretion of the customer and not included in the pricing of the service, as there are many choices and price ranges available. In general, stock Chinese and Russian tubes should be replaced. It doesn't have to be an incredibly expensive replacement, I can assist in researching options as required.

Shipping Guidelines

I warranty my work, parts and labor, for 30 days. All mics are tested and allowed to burn in before shipping. Typical turnaround time is 6 to 10 days once mic is received. I have over 25 years of electronics repair experience. I use my own modified Rode (NT1000's, K2) microphones in the studio, as I am an actual professional musician, producer, and engineer. My modified Rode's have been compared favorably to vintage Neumann's by Platinum Record awarded engineers.
